There are 'severe' delays on the M6 after a lorry overturned.

Police and National Highways traffic officers are currently at the scene of a crash on the northbound carriageway of the motorway, between J17 for Sandbach and J18 for Holmes Chapel.

Three of four lanes were initially shut to allow recovery, resulting in delays of over 30 minutes and just under two miles of congestion.

At 7.34am, Cheshire Police posted on Facebook: "Police are currently dealing with a collision on the M6 northbound between J17 and J18.

"Lanes one, two and three remain closed at this time.

"Motorists are advised to avoid the area."

Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service were also called to the scene, arriving shortly before 4am on Tuesday, December 31.

Four engines, one each from Crewe, Sandbach, Middlewich and Winsford, attended along with the the major rescue unit from Winsford.

A CFRS spokesperson said: "Firefighters were called to rescue one person from a lorry that had overturned on its side.

"Crews were able to free the casualty and assess them on the scene.

"It is believed their injuries are non-life-threatening, and the casualty was handed over to paramedics.

"Police and Highways are also on scene and lanes one to three are closed while the motorway is cleared."

At 11.15am National Highways confirmed that one lane has since been reopened.

However, two of the four northbound lanes remain closed.

Work to recover the HGV and to remove the contents of the trailer are ongoing.

According to the AA, delays are currently 'severe' at around 15 minutes and increasing.

Cheshire Police have been contacted for further information.

Two of four lanes on the M6 Northbound remain closed between J17 Sandbach and J18 Holmes Chapel.

There are delays of up to 20 minutes on approach.
