No decision yet made on Congleton's Christmas Lights Switch-On event

By Tom Avery   17th Sep 2020

Cheshire East will make a decision on the borough's Christmas Lights Switch-On events at the "appropriate time".

To mark the start of the 2019 festivities, Congleton's popular annual event was held on 23rd November and the town centre was brimming with Christmas cheer as residents came out in their thousands.

There was a mix of fair rides, street and stage entertainment, hot food stalls and a winter warmer bar area, plus a variety of craft and charity stalls in the High Street and in the Town Hall. The Town Hall was also visited by Santa in his Grotto.

On stage there was a full programme of acts ranging from local school choirs, to singers, dancers and a couple of Elves who made an appearance with their Elf March!

However, due to the coronavirus pandemic, it remains uncertain whether the 2020 events will be allowed to go ahead.

Cllr Mick Warren, Cheshire East Council cabinet member for communities, said: "It is too early to say with any certainty but we will be considering the matter very carefully in the light of the Covid-19 pandemic.

"A decision will be taken at the appropriate time, following discussion with the appropriate town and parish councils, in the light of the latest rules and guidance from the government and public health experts."
