Experienced landlords are looking to bring a sense of tradition back to a 200-year-old Congleton pub.

The Castle Inn is set to reopen on Friday (July 25), having been taken over by Paul and Helen Bona.

With more than 40 years' experience in the pub trade, the husband-and-wife team have had their eye on the Castle Inn for quite some time.

"I've tried to buy the place on three occasions, I made offers to purchase it off previous owners," Paul said.

"It's a pub we always thought could be and should be a really good community pub - a traditional British pub, which is what we always aim to be."

Paul was once the youngest licensee in the country.

He has run pubs all over the country, moving to Congleton in 1981.

Over the years Paul has worked for many of the major players in the hospitality industry, even helping to kick start the Hungry Horse chain when it launched in 1995.

Locally, Paul and Helen may be best known as the previous landlords at the Olde Kings Arms on High Street.

Despite the Castle Inn having changed a few times in recent months, with their previous experience, Helen and Paul are confident in making it a success.

Paul said: "Our track record suggest we can make it work.

"I don't run pubs for fun, I run them to make a profit.

"It's hard work, everybody knows that. But hey, if you've got to swim upstream a bit then let's start swimming!"

The Castle Inn is expected to open for drinks on Friday (July 25), with a food menu being launched the following week.

"It will be traditional pub fare and reasonably priced," Paul said.

"It will not be in the gastropub area of pricing. We want to encourage customers to come out two or three times a week to have a pint and maybe a bit of dinner.

"I'm confident in what we're doing. We will probably be recruiting in the next few weeks but this is a family-run business.

"We look forward to welcoming customers old and new."
