An ex-mayor is looking to restore a historic pub to its former glory.

Councillor Rob Moreton and his wife Helen are taking over The Rams Head on Rood Hill.

They swing open the doors this Friday (March 14), with ambitious plans to revitalise the pub and make it a hub for the local community.

"It's been really sad watching the decline of the Rams head public house over the last twelve months," said Rob.

"This pub has played a massive part in Congletons' amazing history.

"We need to do everything in our power to keep what I call our old-fashioned pubs thriving and playing a massive part of our community."

Congleton born-and-bred Rob was elected to the town council six years ago.

He assumed the role of town mayor for the 2023-24 civic year.

"The reason I became an independent councillor for Congleton six years ago is because I love my community," Rob said.

"I have been lucky that the community have also massively supported me in this role, even more so when me and my wife Helen were the Mayor and Mayoress of Congleton.

"We are one big team. I'm hopeful the support we have always had from the community will continue in mine and Helen's new adventure which will secure the future of this amazing pub."

Rob hasn't actually worked in the pub industry before.

Thankfully, Helen brings more than enough experience for the both of them, having worked for many years at the Moss Inn, the Queens Head, the Bulls Head and the Horse Shoe.

Rob added: "I personally have no experience in the pub industry but have the best teacher in my wife Helen who I'm hoping will show me patience as I learn my new trade.

"Luckily I'm a quick learner so all will be good!"

Rob and Helen are planning to bring back some classic pub games, such as dominoes and crib.

They are also looking to host quiz nights, poker sessions, karaoke discos and live music.

"We look forward to welcoming new and old customers back to the Rams head," Rob said.

"Let's make this historic pub what it was a long time ago - a community hub for our amazing residents."
