A 121-year-old menswear shop has been praised for its service to Congleton.

Davenports Menswear has been presented with a Town Mayor's High Street Award.

The company, established in 1904 by Tom Davenport, received a 'Lifetime' award as it is over 75-years-old.

Town Mayor, councillor Kay Wesley, said: "Congratulations to all the team at Davenports for your long service to Congleton.

"With four sons, I have shopped here many times over the years, and the customer service is excellent.

"The building itself is of immense importance as one of the oldest in Congleton, dating back to the 1430s.

"The exposed timbers and curious shape of the shop just add to its charm and enhance the shopping experience."

Councillor Wesley presented the award to store manager Bob Clarke.

On the ground floor of the shop you will find high-quality 'lifestyle' clothing for men.

Moving upstairs, there is an extensive range of formal wear on offer, with the business also providing an alteration service.

Councillor Wesley added: "With these awards we hope to highlight the great shops and business in our town centre and say thank you to them for providing a local service.

"You don't have to travel to the nearest city or out-of-town shopping complex to get stylish menswear, it is right here in Congleton.

Davenports, and all other recipients of Town Mayor's High Street Awards, receive a window sticker and a certificate highlighting their years of service to the town.

The artwork featured on both has been specially designed by local resident Kit Perren.

Born in Congleton, Kit has owned a small restoration business in the town for nearly 30 years.

With a background in fine arts, he enjoys sketching and painting scenes that capture Congleton's heritage in his spare time.

Anyone can nominate a business in Congleton town centre or one of the local parades of shops for a High Street Award, provided it has been here for at least five years.
