Get to know Congleton's new countryside ranger
By Matthew Hancock-Bruce 18th Jun 2026
Congleton's new countryside ranger has hit the ground running.
Andy Stubbs joined the Town Council this spring, taking over responsibility for managing, developing and maintaining countryside recreation and nature conservation sites.
His role involves supporting the council's management contract at Astbury Mere Country Park, while also helping to enhance more than 30 biodiversity sites across Congleton and surrounding parishes.
He recently hosted a guided bird walk around the mere, with more community events and volunteering opportunities planned in the coming months.
Andy said: "It's been a fantastic start, and I've enjoyed meeting so many people already.
"Astbury Mere is a wonderful asset for the town and I'm looking forward to helping care for it, while also supporting wildlife and biodiversity projects across Congleton.
"I hope residents will come and say hello if they see me out and about, and I'd encourage anyone interested in conservation or volunteering to get involved."
Andy brings a wealth of experience in managing green spaces, creating habitats for wildlife and working alongside local communities to encourage people to connect with nature.
Residents may recognise him from his previous role with Cheshire Wildlife Trust, where he supported community groups and residents across the county to take action for nature.
More recently, Andy worked as a ranger for Groundwork, managing sites across the West Midlands, including Hassall Green Nature Reserve and Silverdale Country Park.
