A former mayor has helped to safeguard Congleton's civic history.

Councillor Kay Wesley, who served as Town Mayor for 2024-25, and her consort, Mike Wesley, have donated a bespoke oak display cabinet to Congleton Town Hall.

This will be used to house the town's original charter of 1272 during exhibitions, protecting the priceless document while allowing it to remain on public display.

Councillor Wesley said: "It was a great privilege of my mayoral year to help more people - especially our young residents -discover the remarkable history of Congleton.

"Our 1272 charter is not only a precious document but a symbol of the freedoms and responsibilities that have shaped our community for centuries.

"Mike and I are delighted to present this beautiful cabinet to the town so that the charter can be displayed proudly and protected properly for generations to come."

During her mayoral year, councillor Wesley introduced a new programme of Town Hall talks and tours designed to open up the town's civic heritage to local groups, with a particular focus on young people.

Since its launch, the initiative has welcomed the Scouts, Guides, Cubs, Brownies, St John Ambulance, and a range of other youth and adult organisations to the Town Hall.

A highlight of these tours is the opportunity to view the town's historic mace and the original charter of 1272, granted by Henry de Lacy.

The charter gave Congleton the rights of a 'free borough', including the ability to elect a mayor and to hold a market - foundations that have shaped the town's governance and prosperity for over 750 years.

Councillor Wesley presented the cabinet to display the charter to the current mayor, councillor Robert Brittain.

The cabinet was handcrafted by John and Josh Edwards of Edwards Joinery in Congleton.

Mr Edwards senior said: "It has been an honour and privilege to make this for our town, and an unusual and unique project.

"I am sure the display cabinet will protect the charter so that many more people can see this important part of Congleton's history."
