Firefighters had to rescue someone who fell in the Dane.

Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service were called to Congleton last night following reports that a person had fallen into a watercourse.

A crew from Congleton Fire Station arrived at Parkside Place, which is near both the River Dane and the Dane in Shaw Brook, shortly after 9pm.

Firefighters brought the individual to safety before handing them over to the care of paramedics.

It marked the end of a very busy day for CFRS, who were called out to more than 40 separate flooding incidents across the county on Wednesday, January 1.

Several roads in the area have been shut as a result of flooding, including the A34 Melrose Way which is currently closed in both directions from Congleton Road to the B5359 Wilmslow Road.

The A555 Manchester Airport Relief Road is also shut as of Thursday morning, January 2.

It is closed both ways from the B5166 Styal Road to the A523 Roy Chadwick Way.
