‘Dive in Education’ receives generous grant to empower diversity

By Jessica 1st Sep 2023

After the successful launch of Miller Homes' Community Fund last year, its second round is underway with the beneficiaries already selected. Beginning in the autumn of 2022, the fund has so far supported almost 100 charities and groups across the UK.

'Dive In Education', also known as 'Reads For Representation, is a Congleton-based philanthropic endeavour that focuses on enhancing primary school libraries by providing books that feature main characters of colour, authored by individuals from diverse backgrounds. The outstanding organisation has been selected and awarded a £700 cash grant from Miller Homes, which will help fund further events.

Founded nearly two years ago, Dive in Education has already made a significant impact to the region by supplying over 1600 books to primary schools across the country. These efforts are centred on creating a more inclusive classroom environment for children of colour and fostering understanding about racism and antiracism among all students.

The generous contribution from Miller Homes' Community Fund will enable Dive in Education to furnish a school with around 150 thoughtfully curated books. Among these, around 80 titles will cater to recreational reading, while around 70 copies of seven selected titles will serve as resources for guided reading sessions within classrooms.

Emma Udi, Founder of Dive in Education commented: "Representation in literature is a powerful tool for shaping young minds. With the support of Miller Homes generous donation, we are one step closer to creating a more inclusive and empathetic generation, fostering understanding and unity through the pages of diverse stories."

The Community Fund initiative was set up by the builder in September 2022, for local groups to have the opportunity to apply for donations between a minimum of £250 and a maximum of £2,000 as part of Miller Homes' ongoing commitment to support communities.

Clare Noakes, Miller Homes' Sales Director for the North West, said: "The impact of inclusive literature cannot be overstated, as it not only allows children to see themselves in stories but also nurtures empathy, understanding, and cultural awareness. Reads for Representation's commitment to providing books that celebrate diversity and promote antiracism aligns perfectly with Miller Homes values."

The Miller Homes Community Fund has been instrumental in providing financial support to numerous community groups across the North West and throughout the UK. The initiative aims to empower local charities and community organisations, ensuring they have the resources needed to continue their valuable work. Through this program, Miller Homes has allocated a total of £100,000 annually across its ten regional offices, supporting a wide range of initiatives that benefit communities nationwide.

The Dive in Education organisation is based close to the Miller Homes Turnstone Grange Development, which has now sold out. Miller Homes have a number of homes available across the North West available to look at on their website https://www.millerhomes.co.uk/locations/north-west-of-england.aspx
