There's more powers to tackle those who are loitering who may look like causing a crime in Congleton.

Police tackling anti-social behaviour in Congleton are imposing a Dispersal Order in the town centre, as of today.

The Order has been implemented under the Anti-Social Behaviour Act 2003. It will be in place from 4pm on Tuesday February 22 and will last for 48 hours.

It follows the two-day order in place last Friday.

The Order provides the police with the extra powers to break up groups of two or more people, where they believe their behaviour is causing a nuisance, harassment or distress.

The police can move individuals out of the specified area and stop them from returning for up to 24 hours.

If you are aged under 16 and in the dispersal area without the supervision of an adult, the police may take you home if it is appropriate to do so.

If you are ordered to leave the Dispersal Order area and come back into the areas marked on the map, you are likely to be arrested.

Inspector Jim Adams said: "We will continue to use these powers to deter anti-social behaviour along with longer term solutions which we are working on with our partners at Cheshire East Council and the local schools."

No antisocial behaviour data for January or February 2022 is currently available, however, the first order was in response to a serious assault of a 51-year-old man by a group of teenagers earlier this month.

Congleton Police Station is located on Market Square.
