A Congleton Pride supporter has been celebrated for their efforts.

Jess Maddison was crowned Volunteer of the Year at Cheshire's LGBTQ+ Awards.

This recognition highlights their dedication to creating inclusive, joyful spaces for the local rainbow community and allies.

"I was shocked because I was just doing what I enjoy and having a great time. It never occurred to me that I would get an award for something I enjoy," Jess said.

Asked about their experience at Congleton Pride, Jess said: "I think Pride is important, and I wanted to meet other people who cared as much as I do about the community.

"My favourite part of volunteering is meeting new people and celebrating the diverse community. It always surprises me how many people show up to the events and feel like they are in a safe space.

"I've learnt that I am more capable than I thought I was, and being part of a team makes the successes more enjoyable.

"I've also learnt how to use my voice more effectively to get my points across clearly."

Encouraging others to follow suit and volunteer at Congleton Pride, Jess added: "I would encourage anyone to volunteer.

"It's fun, joyful and rewarding whether you're part of the LGBTQIA+ community or an ally.

"You meet amazing people and get a buzz from helping out.

"It's a safe space for all who want to join, or even just to learn more and ask questions."

Cheshire's LGBTQ+ Awards are organised and supported by the charity, Body Positive.

They aim to highlight the community's commitment to LGBTQ+ visibility, solidarity and local pride.

Dr Abby Smith, Co‑chair of Congleton Pride, shared her congratulations: "Jess brings warmth, commitment and a genuine passion for community to everything they do.

"Their contribution helps make Congleton Pride the welcoming, vibrant and safe space our town is proud of. We're thrilled to see their work recognised across Cheshire."

A volunteer-led charity, Congleton Pride are currently recruiting volunteers for two roles – communications manager and social media manager.
