Sir Keir Starmer has confirmed that he will be standing down as leader of the Labour Party.

Reflecting on the news, Congleton MP Sarah Russell praised some of the positive results achieved since Labour's success at the 2024 General Election.

However, she accepts that the time has come for a new leader to build on this progress.

She said: "Keir Starmer has led a government that has stabilised the economy, invested in public services, and improved Britain's standing on the world stage.

"Reducing NHS waiting lists, increasing renters' rights, and cutting child poverty, is an excellent legacy of which he can be proud. I thank him for his service and wish him and his family all the best.

"Nonetheless, as I have been clear, we need new leadership to take the country with us on this journey. We need to build on the progress to date and continue to deliver on our manifesto commitments.

"My priorities in the coming days and weeks will be unchanged- what is best for the Congleton constituency, and ultimately the country.

"I understand that you want me to focus on the cost of living, improving public services and supporting our businesses and community, which I will continue to do.

"As your MP, I remain dedicated to representing the towns and villages in our constituency and giving a voice to what matters in our area."

Stood outside 10 Downing Street on Monday morning, June 22, Sir Keir announced his decision to resign.

Nominations for his successor will open on July 9, with the aim of having a new leader and prime minister in place before Parliament returns in September.

Sir Keir said: "The question my party is asking now is whether I am best placed to lead us into the next general election.

"I have heard the answer of my parliamentary party to that question, and I accept that answer with good grace.

"Every decision I have taken has been about putting the country I love first.

"That is why I will resign as leader of the Labour Party."

He added: "When I leave the biggest job in the country, I shall spend more time on the most important job, being the best husband I can to my fantastic wife, Vic, who has been a rock by my side through good times and bad, and being the best dad I can to my beautiful children, who are my pride and my joy."
