Congleton Town Council are doing their utmost to ensure residents in care homes can virtually participate in the town's commemoration to mark the 75th anniversary of VE day.

Bank Holiday Friday 8th May marks the landmark of Victory in Europe (VE) day 'a shared moment of celebration.

Ward councillor Rob Moreton has contacted all the nursing homes and invited them to join him on a Zoom call to celebrate the historic day.

The event will begin at 3.15pm, which will be followed by a virtual sing-a-long with everyone singing Vera Lynns – 'We Will Meet Again' at 3.30pm.

Residents can join online, or you can just sing-a-long in your house or garden.

Coun Moreton told Congleton Nub News: "Several residential care homes have accepted the invitation and Union Jack flags are being supplied.

"The town council want to try and make it as special as it can be in these difficult times for the residents of Congleton."

Congleton is keen to mark this anniversary, and on Friday there will be messages across social media with Town Crier Paul Bates reciting a 'Cry for Peace' and Town Mayor Coun Sally Ann Holland reading a short poem and local operatic singer Carrie-Ann Williams will also be covering a song for the occasion.

Coun Holland said: "Even though we can't celebrate together, this monumental anniversary should not be missed.

"It would be a great tribute if households across Congleton could join in the celebrations from their own homes and gardens, keeping our distance but still feeling part of the great community that we have in Congleton.

"I, along with many, will be joining the nation's toast at 3pm to thank those who gave so much!"

It is hoped that thousands will join the Nation's Toast to the Heroes at 3pm. In the lead up to the event, the town council plans to add resources to their website to download 'festival packs' to decorate the house/front window.

Any other residents who want to take part in the town's celebrations need to contact Coun Moreton on 07597085396 as soon as possible.

Due to the current pandemic and social distancing the majority of VE Day celebrations have been cancelled or postponed.
