A historic church is going under the hammer.

Congleton United Reform Church is to be sold at auction next month.

The decision to sell the Grade II-listed building was announced earlier this year as a result of falling congregation numbers.

"As times have changed and the congregation has got smaller in size we find the current building no longer fits our need," read a social media post from the church.

"As fewer people come in today the church needs to adapt and find smaller premises it can go out into the community from."

Congleton URC, formerly the Congregational Church, has had its home on Antrobus Street since 1877.

Following 148 years of independent Christian worship, the building will now be sold by public online auction.

Bidding commences on Tuesday, September 23, and closes the following day.

The listing describes the property as a 'substantial and imposing' church on a total plot size of 0.39 acres.

It adds: "The gothic-style property fronts onto Antrobus Street on the outskirts of Congleton town centre and could suit a variety of future uses including community asset or possible residential development, subject to obtaining the necessary planning consents.

"Internally the accommodation is arranged over ground and first floors with the main hall on the ground floor along with a vestry, cafe area and WC facilities.

"On the first floor there are two large function rooms, kitchen, various storerooms and further WC.

"Externally there is parking for approximately eight vehicles."

Congleton URC will continue their mission elsewhere.

"In truth, this will probably involve us using different spaces throughout the town to run our mission and service events and activities," read the church's social media post.

"Therefore you could see the church pop up anywhere, watch out for us and come and join us.

"The main point is that although we are moving, the journey, our worship and work continues, so watch out for us, come and join us and support us as you are able."
