A start date for renovation work on Congleton's Cenotaph could be agreed this month.
Following the latest government advice, the contractors for the project have told Congleton Town Council and Congleton Partnership that they believe work can commence on refurbishing the current War Memorial, on Lawton Street.
The Congleton Cenotaph is being refurbished to add the missing circa 239 names of the fallen to the plaques, taking the total names to 590.
Construction work was originally scheduled to commence from 21st April, but due to the coronavirus pandemic, the project was delayed.
A Congleton Town Council spokesperson told Nub News: "The materials needed for the project have been secured.
"There is a small amount of work to do on the final contracts and the new risk assessments needed to take into account the changed environment."
The Cenotaph Working Group has a video link meeting with the contractors and project manager on Wednesday (27th May) where it is "hoped" that a start date and work plan will be agreed.
Plans for the dedication ceremony at the end of the project have been put on hold and will only be able to happen when it is safe and acceptable to organise large public events.
The refurbishment is being carried out so that the town's Cenotaph can display the names of all the local men and women who have lost their lives through serving their Country.
It is not too late to make a small donation to the project, people can post a cheque to Congleton Town Council at Congleton Town Hall, High Street, Congleton, CW12 1BN.
Or residents can drop cheques into the post box at the Town Hall or they can pay by BACS payment to Congleton Town Council – c/o Royal Bank of Scotland - Sort Code: 16-17-12 Account Number: 11411170 Quoting 'cenotaph'.
