Congleton: 28 council places up for grabs in May 2023

You have just over 50 days to register if you want to stand for councillor.

There are six Cheshire East Council seats for grabs in Congleton.

There are also 22 Congleton Town Council seats up for grabs.

Both are the maximum number of seats available for Congleton.

To be eligible to stand, you need to be over 18 and registered to vote.

You should also be willing to stay in office until May 2027.

The local elections are on May 4, so you need to register by April 4 to get your name on the ballot for either borough or town election.

Not much has changed from a Cheshire East perspective, but there is some new information should you want to become a Town Councillor.

As part of the 2021 Boundary Review, Congleton is being divided into five wards – with four or five councillors in each (rather than the current two wards with 10 councillors in each). This will result in 22 councillors.

Once elected, the 22 councillors will be expected to work together on policy and direction, attend regular council meetings and make decisions on services and budgets. Councillors can expect to be contacted by residents about local issues, and they may be appointed to outside groups.

The new ward names are West, Central, South East, North and North East. The old wards of Congleton West and Congleton East will no longer exist.

If you're on the fence about running or just want more questions, Congleton Town Hall will welcome a 'Become a Councillor' event on Thursday 2 March.

The high street venue will field enquiries about the elections and what you do as a councillor.

This High Street event starts at 5.30pm for potential borough councillors and 7pm for town councillors.

Please note, if you wish you attend you must book your place in advance via CEC's elections team on 01270 685922 or email [email protected]. Please note: This is not putting your name on the ballot, this is just to get you into the event to find out more.

From there, you have until 4pm on the 4th April to confirm your candidacy.

Here's a rough guide on what a Town Councillor does (left) and a CEC Councillor does (right).
