'A tremendous honour' - New Mayor of Congleton elected

Councillor Robert Brittain has been elected as the new Mayor of Congleton.
A mayor making ceremony was held during the annual council meeting at the Town Hall on Thursday (May 22).
Councillor Brittain, the former deputy, takes over the chain from councillor Kay Wesley and will serve until May 2026.
In his inaugural address, Cllr Brittain expressed heartfelt thanks to his fellow councillors and the community.
He said: "It is a tremendous honour to be chosen to serve as Mayor of Congleton.
"This town is built on the strength, kindness and spirit of its people, and I look forward to working together to support local initiatives and celebrate the community that makes Congleton so special."

During the ceremony, councillor Brittain named his three chosen charities for the year – Mentell, Visyon, and Circus Starr.
The mayor also announced that his wife, Susan Brittain, will serve as mayoress for the year, and Cadet Haru Pepper of Titan Explorer Scouts will take on the role of mayor's cadet.
Meanwhile, councillors voted councillor Suzy Firkin as deputy mayor for the forthcoming year.

Following the ceremonial proceedings, the council moved on to formal business.
Councillors voted on and approved the constitution of Council Committees, the appointment of members to working groups, and other formal business for the municipal year ahead.
Local groups and organisations are invited to participate in the Mayor's Civic Service and Parade on Sunday, June 22.
The parade will depart from the Town Hall at 2.45pm for a 3pm service at St Peter's Church, followed by light refreshments at the Town Hall.
