Cheshire East Rangers will once again be clearing up the "mess" left at a popular beauty spot in Congleton after "selfish" people set numerous fires and littered the area late last night (Saturday, 3rd April).

The rangers will be clearing all types of litter at Dane-in-Shaw Pasture which is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSI) due to it being a grassland of national importance.

The beauty spot has become a dumping ground over the bank holiday weekend.

Sgt Simpson, of the Cheshire Police Rural Crime Team, said: "Sadly, as a team we cannot be everywhere all the time and we are looking for support from you to teach your families about how to respect and look after the countryside.

"We all have a duty of care for it. Twice now I've met a local resident who has to be commended for his daily litter pick of the site.

"He is mortified to see how people are treating such a wonderful asset that the town has."

Residents who plan on visiting the area today with their children and dogs have been warned that there is broken glass "widely spread" across the ground.

Sgt Simpson concluded: "It takes a community to solve an issue not just the police."

A Cheshire East Countryside Ranger spokesperson said: "Bank Holiday weekend at Dane in Shaw Pasture Site of Special Scientific Interest!

"Such a stunning site for wildlife that's being damaged by fires and litter.

"If a bin isn't near, please take your rubbish home with you. No BBQs - they're not allowed at any of our countryside sites."
