Seven have been arrested after fights at last month's Congleton vs Macclesfield FC match - with none being from our town.

The Bank Holiday brawls that erupted during The Bears derby against The Silkmen has led to multiple arrests.

Seven men have been arrested following investigation into disorder at Macclesfield FC's Leasing.com Stadium.

The not-so magnificent seven have been arrested following an investigation into the unrest at Macclesfield Football Club's NWCFL Premier Division fixture against Congleton Town.

Congleton lost the game by one goal with a very late winner, but disruption in the crowds occurred before the goal just after the 80th minute.

Cheshire Police officers were made aware of disorder at the Moss Rose football ground at around 4.50pm on Monday 30 August.

Coppers swiftly attended the scene and a dispersal order was put in place in the area, preventing anyone from returning to the ground within 48 hours, including those from Congleton.

A number of enquiries has led to seven people being arrested this morning (Friday 17 September) on suspicion of violent disorder.

All are male, six are from Cheshire, and one from Derbyshire. Not one is a Congleton fan.

Detective Inspector John O'Driscoll said: "The arrests today are a culmination of hard work and dedication across a number of departments who have had to gather evidence and analyse hours of CCTV and mobile phone footage to find those responsible for the disorder.

"The investigation is very much continuing and as enquiries continue further arrests will follow.

"No-one should go to a football match and be subjected to violence – we are committed in doing everything possible to prevent this from happening."

Superintendent Peter Crowcroft said: "While the majority of football fans who attended the match were well behaved and had an enjoyable time, unfortunately there were a small number who were intent on causing harm. This will not be tolerated in our town.

"Today's action should act as a warning to football fans looking to visit Macclesfield to cause trouble and shows that we will investigate any reports of crime made to us and take relevant action where possible."

Six of the arrested are from Macclesfield, and one is from the High Peak.

Cheshire Police has not named them all - but they may be named when they are sentenced.

The six males from Macclesfield are 19, 23, 26, 31, 34, and 54.

A 51-year-old from Buxton, who have their own football team, was also arrested.

No pictures of the arrested were supplied - though may be released when they are sentenced.

Congleton Town FC have been contacted for comment.

Macclesfield FC have also been contacted for comment, which at the time, 'vehemently condemned the actions of a minority of spectators', a sentiment echoed by The Bears.

It may be the case that Cheshire Police have arrested all Macclesfield fans first, and Congleton fans will come separately.

Congleton Nub News will report on more arrests said to follow as they come.
