Her Majesty the Queen is set to be honoured in Congleton by planting a tree for every year she has been on the throne.

This year, Queen Elizabeth II is celebrating 70 years since her coronation.

The late May bank holiday will be replaced with a day off on Thursday June 2 and an additional bank holiday on Friday June 3.

And our town will also be showing their gratitude for Her Majesty by planting a tree for every year she has ruled.

This is according to plans by Congleton Town Council, set to be confirmed on Wednesday February 3.

Jackie MacArthur from Congleton Town Council said in the meeting's agenda:

"To mark the platinum jubilee there is a national campaign, ''The Queen's Green Canopy' asking people, towns and parishes 'to a plant tree for the jubilee'. The 'Trees for Congleton' group, as part of their general campaign to plant 30,000 trees in Congleton, has recommended that Congleton Town Council may like to get involved in the Queen's Green Canopy by planting 70 blossoming trees (suggesting flowering cherry) in Congleton. "As well as being attractive to look at and removing carbon, Cherry trees are enjoyed by wildlife, particularly birds and are a source of community food." Nine trees are planned in our town's carehomes, meanwhile one tree each are earmarked for 11 schools in our area. This would leave around 50 for verges of the various major roads leading into Congleton, such as; the A34 Astbury end near Padgbury Lane, Sandbach Road, Holmes Chapel Road, Buxton Road, Macclesfield Rd/Triangle verge near Jackson Road, and the A34 Manchester Road. MacArthur added: "Any remaining trees could be planted at a suitable site in conjunction with 'It's Your Neighbourhoo' groups in Congleton. "Ideally it is hoped that some of the trees could be planted before the end of March, but if availability continues to prove difficult it may need to be an autumn project." The trees are estimated to cost £15 per tree, plus three quid for stakes and plant guards. Volunteers will give their time for Queen and country to plant them. The final cost is likely to be between £1200 and £1300, and purchased from a local supplier. Trees trap carbon dioxide, the releasing of such gas causes the greenhouse effect, which leads to climate change. So this is nothing but good news for our town!
