A new specialist swimming facility has launched in Congleton.

Hydra Swim Academy, based at the newly established Hydra Lair, is now open, offering expert stroke analysis and professional coaching for swimmers of all abilities.

Founded by experienced coaches Sarah Nixon and Claire Hocknell, the academy was created to address challenges faced in traditional pool environments, where large group sessions can limit opportunities for detailed individual feedback, particularly for underwater technique.

Sarah, a Level 3 Swim England senior Coach who has developed English and British age group champions, said: "We wanted to create an elite training environment that was accessible locally — supporting swimmers from learning to swim through to high-performance competition."

Using an Endless Pool capable of speeds equivalent to a 56-second 100 metres, alongside underwater mirrors, high-frame-rate 4K video analysis and real-time communication headsets, swimmers receive instant visual feedback designed to accelerate technical improvement.

Research into swim mechanics suggests that optimising technique alone can improve propulsive efficiency by up to 20% — comparable to months of additional fitness training.

The facility opens at a time when swimming participation is recovering following the pandemic but national concerns remain around access to lessons and facilities.

Swim England has warned that significant numbers of children risk leaving primary school unable to swim 25 metres, while more than 500 pools have closed across the UK over the past decade.
