Major road closed due to serious road traffic collision

A major road is closed due to a serious road traffic collision.

The A536 Macclesfield Road is closed between Congleton and Macclesfield due to the incident.

Firefighters were called to reports of a collision between a lorry and a car on Congleton Road in Gawsworth at 6:20am this morning (Wednesday).

A Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "One person inside the car was trapped and believed to have sustained serious injuries.

"Crews worked alongside paramedics to safely remove the man from the vehicle using spreaders, rams and tools.

"He was then handed into the care of the ambulance service."

Two fire engines from Macclesfield attended the scene.

A Cheshire Police spokesperson said: "At around 6.15am police were called to reports of a serious collision on the A536 Congleton Road in Gawsworth.

"Officers attended the scene and on arrival they found there had been a collision between two vehicles, a truck and a car.

"One person sustained serious injuries as a result of the incident, they have been taken to the Royal Stoke hospital.

"The road was closed as a result of the incident – and this closure will remain in place while planned resurfacing work takes place."

A Cheshire East Highways spokesperson said: "Our incident response team are working with Cheshire Police at the scene. Please avoid the area."
