The nearest Sainsbury's to Congleton is set to close their Sainsbury's Café.

Supermarket chain Sainsbury's will close 200 of their in-store Cafés in April, and just 67 Sainsbury's Café's will stay open.

However, Biddulph's Wharf Road Sainsbury's, just over five miles away from Congleton, will close their Sainsbury's Café next month.

Now, Congleton residents will have to shop at Macclesfield or Leek Sainsbury's if they want to take advantage of a Sainsbury's Cafés.

The nationwide culling of Café's move is set to put around 2,000 jobs at risk, with Sainsbury's also announcing plans to close 34 of its less popular hot food counters.

The closures have come as part of new plans aimed at updating the eat-in, takeaway and home delivery selections for customers.

Sainsbury's says it is hoping to open 30 new 'food halls' in 2022, as well as 30 Starbucks coffee shops within supermarkets. It is possible Congleton's closest Sainsbury's (Biddulph) could benefit from this.

Simon Roberts, Sainsbury's Chief Executive Officer said: "We are totally focused on improving what we can deliver for our customers and at the same time, working hard to make our business simpler.

"As we go through this period of transition, we have taken the difficult decision to close 200 of our cafes next month.

"We have spoken to all colleagues affected by these changes today and are absolutely committed to supporting them in any way we can during this uncertain time.

"Of course, we understand this is very unsettling for our colleagues, but we must keep adapting our business to make sure we are offering customers the best possible food and drink at affordable prices."

Alex Rayner, General Manager Starbucks UK said: "We look forward to building on our existing relationship with Sainsbury's to bring the safe, convenient, Starbucks Experience to more of their customers, and for our cafes to play an important role as a gathering place within the community.

"COVID-19 accelerated customer trends towards convenience and as a result we've continued to increase investment in new formats and digital channels such as Drive-Thru, delivery, Mobile Order and Pay and our loyalty program Starbucks Rewards."
