Congleton's Lovell Quinta Arboretum springs into action

By Alex Greensmith 16th Feb 2022

A horticultural paradise in Congleton have released a tranquil video inviting you to visit them this spring.

The Lovell Quinta Arboretum, in Swettenham, Congleton,

was originally the private project of radio astronomer Sir Bernard Lovell of

Jodrell Bank fame.

Almost seventy years on, the 28-acre site is now open to the public.

As a quiet, intimate beauty spot, it's often been described as 'a hidden gem' of our town – in fact, we wouldn't be surprised if some Congleton Nub News readers had never heard of it before.

Located on Swettenham Lane, TLQA it has over 800 species of plants, trees and shrubs.

In spring, the Arboretum comes into its own with around 16,000 daffodils and 40,000 snowdrop bulbs bursting into flower.

The early rhododendrons are coming out and buds are appearing on every branch. The blossoming garden would make a perfect family day out, especially after the past few years where people have started to reassess our relationship with nature.

Now, the Tatton Garden Society (TGS) who own and manage the Arboretum have released some short promotional videos to help visitors find out more about

the site and know what to expect when they visit.  The first flick in the series - 'Spring' - is out now. Just click the play button at the top of this article. "It's such an interesting place,†said David Skidmore, chairman of the TGS. "It boasts three National Collections of trees, which help with the

understanding and conservation of important species, so it's more than just a nice place for a walk.

"We have hundreds of species of trees and shrubs and there are

some beautiful views over the nearby Dane Valley as well.  "Spring is a particularly wonderful time with blossoms appearing all about.  "It is great time to come and look at shrubs and trees to give you ideas on

how to brighten up your own gardens. Or maybe just come along to

cheer yourself amongst the new flowers.  "Have a look at our new short video and you will see what I mean." The 'spring' video was produced with the help Congleton videographer Majestical, who have an office inside Riverside on Congleton's Mountbatten Way. Their director, Katie Nuttall, lives in Congleton. She already frequented the space before she was commissioned to shoot the short.  "We've really enjoyed being part of this project,†said Katie.  "It's not every day we get invited to film at such a beautiful place as the

Lovell Quinta Arboretum.

"It was an experience that left our hearts and souls filled with a sense of

peace and appreciation.  "I've since been back for visits with my family, and the kids were just captivated.  "It really is a magical place and we hope our videos help more local visitors to

enjoy its beauty."

The video can be viewed at the top of this article.

The Arboretum is open 364 days a year. Entry is free for members of the Tatton Gardens Society, but non-members can enter at the affordable price of £2.50 per person.

The Arboretum is maintained entirely by volunteers and all entry monies go back into the upkeep of this one-of-a-kind Congleton green space.

Congleton canines on leads are welcome. It is open from 9am to 6pm daily.
