Congleton is on the lookout for a new Town Crier to perform at many of the town's festivals, large events, and support civic occasions organised by the town council.

The appointed Crier will also have the chance to participate in both local and national competitions.

This position is voluntary and deeply rooted in Congleton's rich traditions. The initial appointment will be for one year, with the potential for a longer-term role.

The ideal candidate will have a loud, clear voice, a deep pride for Congleton, and must reside in Congleton or the surrounding parishes.

Congleton Town Mayor, Cllr Kay Wesley, said: "The Town Crier plays a unique and cherished role in Congleton's history, bringing energy and tradition to our local events.

"We are looking for someone who embodies the spirit of Congleton and has the passion to keep this important tradition alive.

"It is a wonderful opportunity to be the voice of our town, and we encourage everyone who loves Congleton to apply."

All interested individuals are required to complete the application form, which is available on the Congleton Town Council website or as a paper copy at the Congleton Information Centre.

The deadline for submissions is Tuesday 24 September 2024.

Shortlisted candidates will be invited to showcase their skills by performing a public cry at the Green Fayre on Saturday 28 September at 11am.

The public is encouraged to gather in front of the Town Hall to cheer for their favourite contender. A judging panel will make the final selection based on the performances at the event.

Congleton Town Council encourages nominations from people of all races, religions, genders, sexual orientations, gender identities, and individuals with disabilities or neurodiversity.

The council told Nub News it is committed to being as inclusive as possible.

The town council will provide the Town Crier's outfit, with the help of a skilled local costume make, and cover any out-of-pocket expenses for approved civic events.

It will also enrol the appointed Crier in the Ancient and Honourable Guild of Town Criers, and support attendance at regional and national competitions if desired.
