Congleton to mark 80th anniversary of Victory over Japan

Congleton will come together to celebrate the 80th Anniversary of VJ Day.
Congleton Town Council, in partnership with the Royal British Legion and All Saints Congleton, will mark the occasion with a commemorative service at the Cenotaph on Lawston Street.
The public is invited to attend the service, which begins at 11am on Friday (August 15), and pay tribute to all those who served and sacrificed in the Far East and Pacific during WWII.
The Town Mayor, councillor Robert Brittain, said: "VJ Day reminds us of the courage and resilience of all those who served in the Far East, many of whom endured unimaginable hardship.
"As we mark the 80th anniversary, it's important that we come together as a community to remember and honour their sacrifices.
"I encourage residents to join us in paying tribute to this often-overlooked chapter of our shared history."
Following the service, the town council encourages residents, visitors, and local businesses to join in with the national two-minute silence at midday.
Elsewhere, Streetscape gardeners have created a specially designed floral plaque in Congleton Park to mark the occasion.
Meanwhile, bunting has been placed through the town centre as a visual reminder of this important anniversary.
