Boalloy Running Club are hosting a charity run this month, it will be taking place in the heart of Congleton.

The relay marathon will take place on Sunday 22nd May on Astbury Mere. Lee Campbell, a local man, is amongst some of the organisers.

The club is known to locals for their annual charity events, raising over £50,000 for various local charities. Lee explained the impact these events have had:

"We raised over £800 in a single event in 2019, but we usually end up between £1,500 and £2,000 for charities throughout the year," Lee said.

Both men and women are welcome in the club.

"Over the 36 years Boalloy Running Club has been going, we have raised over £50,000 for various local charities."

The club is seeking more volunteers to get involved with this year's relay. Lee hopes for new people to get involved.

"People should volunteer because it's all for charity and we need as much help as possible," he added.

Tickets cost £3 per person, with participant ages ranging between eight and 70 years old.

This will be the fifth marathon relay the club has hosted, with hopes to continue for years to come.

All proceeds from the even will be donated to local Congleton charity Crossroads Together.

"This is our fifth marathon relay, we were only held back by Covid for two years, so we want it to be an annual event, but we will take it each year as it comes," Lee also said.

"We picked Crossroads Together because it's a local charity who do some fantastic work that people are not aware of, with very little funding."

Crossroads Together are a care charity based in Overton House on West Street.

We are so thankful to Lee and all the members of the Boalloy Running Club for putting this charity event on once again," said Andy Williams of Crossroads Together.

"We are delighted Lee is able to re-start the event post pandemic and we couldn't be more grateful for donations at a time when many social care providers, including Crossroads Together are struggling to get back on their feet after the last two years.

"The money raised will help to support unpaid carers and people with care needs. We hope as many people join in as possible and everyone has an amazing day. Thank you to everyone in advance who takes part on the day."

Boalloy Running Club was founded in 1984 by two employees of Boalloy Industries, Ray Barlow, and Dennis Lee. In a bid to get fitter the two men started casually jogging and before long more people asked to join in.

Congleton tech company Boalloy Industries are based on the Radnor Park Industrial Estate. But you don't have to be an employee of the business to join the club.

In 2004 the club introduced a junior sector with coaches Lee Campbell and Carl Williams.

"This section of the club has thrived over the years with many of the juniors not running in the senior ranks."

As of 2019, the club hosts 22 teams with regular training sessions around Astbury Mere.
