Congleton's local larger authority of Cheshire East grew by more than 28,000 in the past ten years - according to the latest 2021 census figures.

Census 2021 first results include rounded population and household estimates for England and Wales, at local authority level (Cheshire East) and are cross-tabulated by sex and age.

And while we don't know precise figures for the town of Congleton yet, we can learn how our wider area has changed.

The first instalment of 2021 Census figures, published by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) today (June 28), has revealed Cheshire East grew by 28,673 people.

Cheshire East and Cheshire West Comparison

In 2011, the census revealed Cheshire East had a population of 370,127.

This rose to 398,800 in 2021 - a rise of 7.7%.

This population growth is less than nearby local authority Cheshire West and Chester. In 2011, the population of this area was 329,608.

The 2021 census has revealed it grew to 357,200 - a rise of 8.4%.

England and Wales Population

The census found that the population of England and Wales grew by more than 3.5 million (6.3%) since the last census in 2011 - rising from 56,075,912 to 59,597,300.

In the North West of England, the population now stands at 7.4 million - a rise of 5.2%.

The East of England had the highest population growth of 8.3% - now standing at 6.3 million.

Wales had the smallest population growth of all areas, rising by just 1.4% - approximately 44,000 people.

Other Data

The 2021 census has revealed that there are still more women across England and Wales compared to men - 51%.

Data also shows there were 1.4 million more households across the UK.

This is an increase of 6.1%. The total number of households across England and Wales now stands at 24.8 million.

When will the next set of data come out?

ONS aims to publish all other main Census 2021 data within two years of the census.

The next instalments of the census results will be released between Autumn to Winter this year.

This will include information on demography and migration - released between October and November.

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) released the first instalment of 2021 census today - June 28 (ONS).

Information on education and housing will also be released - between November and December.

By Spring 2023 we will have more precise details on religion, migration and more.

Every ten years the Office for National Statistics (ONS) carries out a census to find out more about the people who live in England and Wales.

It aims to find more about the make-up of local neighbourhoods.

The first census was conducted in 1801, and the most recent was from March 21 2021.

This census provides the most accurate estimate of all the people and households in Cheshire East.

There is no other survey that gives as much information about our society and future needs.
