Businesses in Congleton have joined Marcus Rashford's half-term school meals campaign.

It comes after the political storm following the government's vote down of an opposition motion which would have extended free school meal provision to pupils in the October half-term and beyond to next Easter.

Now to help fill the void and join in with the Manchester United and England star's national effort to ensure no children goes hungry, generous offers are already being made in the town.

Wild & Wild, on Bridge Street, will be offering select meals for free during the school holidays.

Posting on their Facebook page, Team Wild said: "We're with you Marcus Rashford and your inspiring efforts to feed our children.

"For all you parents out there - we'd like to offer you free meals for your little darlings throughout half-term, starting today (24th October until 30th October).

"As parents of three little ones this is a campaign that we can get behind 100%.

"So we will be offering select meals for free to support any of you that would appreciate a little gesture from all of us at Wild & Wild."

Congleton charity Ruby's Fund, located at Meridian House on Roe Street, is offering free packed lunch bags this half-term.

Residents can either send them a private message through their Facebook page or call 01260 277666.

The packed lunches will be available for collection from Monday to Friday between 10am - 12pm.

The Deli & Milkshake Co, on Havannah Street in Buglawton, will also be offering free healthy school pack lunches.

The staff posted on Facebook: "The government's decision shook us. I was ashamed as a country and as a community.

"We want to help as much as we can. We are offering Monday to Friday next week, free healthy school pack lunches for children who are really in need.

"For those families who are seriously struggling to make ends meet, to feed their children in these hard times.

"It's never a child's fault and this should of been supported in the first place."

Parents can arrange a day/time for collection by messaging the Deli & Milkshake Co on Facebook.

Multiflex Sports tweeted: "In light of the disgraceful decision by the government to not back Marcus Rashford's free schools meal plan - we will be accepting donations at our half-term camps for the local foodbanks for Middlewich and Congleton."
