Congleton Aldi to close as new Biddulph store opens

Congleton Aldi will be closing at the end of the month, just before a new store opens in Biddulph.

The German discount supermarket have decided to replace Congleton's Aldi with a newer, and larger store in Biddulph.

A seven minute drive separates Congleton's Aldi and the new Biddulph store.

As a result, the company believes the two cannot co-exist at the same time.

Congleton's Mountbatten Mountbatten Way store will close a day before Biddulph's Tunstall Road store opens.

An Aldi Spokesperson said: "Our [Congleton] Mountbatten Way store no longer meets our requirements and the store will close on Wednesday 24th November.

"Our new Tunstall Road store in Biddulph will open on Thursday 25th November.

"The store will be in our new layout, which ensures more space for fresh, chilled and food-to-go ranges.

"It will be much brighter with simpler layouts and wider aisles.

"Our valued customers will still be able to shop and save close to home at our new Tunstall Road store, and our amazing colleagues will be relocated to the new store."

While Congleton employees will be offered a new job at the Staffordshire store, not all will take it.

Biddulph Aldi will bring 30 jobs, and be opened by Team GB canoeist Joseph Clarke.

Biddulph Aldi Store Manager Rob Ferrari Wade said: "We can't wait to open the doors to the new store in Biddulph.

"It's set to be a special day and having Olympic hero Joseph Clarke join us will make it a morning to remember."

It is not yet known what business will fill the empty premises on Mountbatten Way.

In addition to the new store in Biddulph, while Congleton will be losing an Aldi, nearby Macclesfield will be gaining another.

The opening times for the remaining dates of Congleton Aldi are as follows:

Monday 8am–10pm

Tuesday 8am–10pm

Wednesday 8am–10pm

Thursday 8am–10pm

Friday 8am–10pm

Saturday 8am–10pm

Sunday 10am–4pm

When Congleton Nub News visited the store at the weekend, a banner outside was advertising for new jobs, despite the store's closure.

A search for 'Congleton' on Aldi's Recruitment website claims there are seven jobs.

However, you cannot view the job description for them or apply, you can only 'register interest'.

This is either an error, or further vacancies for the Biddulph store incorrectly labelled as Congleton.

Congleton Nub News has contacted other major supermarkets to ask if they will be filling the vacancy.
