After being overlooked in the first tranche of Cheshire East active travel schemes, Congleton's request for 20mph speed limits on some roads, could be granted in the next round of government funding.
Congleton ward councillor Suzie Akers Smith, who is Cheshire East Council's cycling and walking champion, attended Tuesday's Alsager Town Council meeting, to discuss concerns surrounding Alsager's active travel scheme on Lodge Road.
However, Cllr Rod Fletcher, chair of Alsager Town Council, asked at Tuesday's meeting why out of 118 temporary speed reductions announced by Cheshire East active travel, which included 34 in Macclesfield, 15 in Wilmslow, 11 in Crewe and 58 in Sandbach, none were selected in towns like Alsager, Congleton, Nantwich, Bollington or Poynton.
Alsager Town Council had requested for 20mph speed reductions to be applied on the main roads into Alsager.
Cllr Akers Smith stated the initial funding from the government for active travel measures to be implemented across the borough was a maximum of £155,000, which "only paid for a certain amount of measures".
Cllr Akers Smith confirmed that Congleton had also requested 20mph speed limits, but like Alsager none were included within the 118 chosen by Cheshire East.
Speaking about Cheshire East's decision criteria, Cllr Akers Smith, added: "I don't know how they [Cheshire East] decided, but the money was limited.
"We have had indicative confirmation of another £619,000 government funding forthcoming, and I do know that Cheshire East has put in a further application for £1.1million to create further temporary cycle lanes, 20mph speed limits and low traffic neighbourhood environments.
"I am hoping that in the next round, the towns that didn't get the reduced speed limits will get them the next time round. Hopefully with the next tranche of funding, those reduced speed limits can come into Congleton and Alsager."
Further schemes will be developed in later phases, following pledged government funding of up to £619,000 across the borough.
