Prime Minister Boris Johnson addressed the nation laying out new national lockdown plans.
In an address to the nation at 8pm on Monday evening, the PM set out 'further steps' - after existing tiers currently in place have failed to prevent the spread of coronavirus that has been driven by a new variant.
The government made the decision after the UK saw a record high of 58,784 daily cases and 407 deaths.
The measures that the Prime Minister announced were:
The government is instructing you to stay at home unless you are shopping for essential, to exercise, to seek medical existence and to escape domestic abuse.
You should only go to work if you absolutely cannot do it at home.
Schools will move to remote learning from tomorrow apart from vulnerable children and those of key workers.
Nurseries will remain open.
Exams in the summer will be cancelled and replaced with different assessments.
The Prime Minister also stressed the importance of the vaccine.
By the middle of February the first vaccine dose will be offered to all those in the top priority groups if the programme goes well.
Mr Johnson is hopeful that schools can open after the February half-term.
The Prime Minister believes we are 'entering the last phase of the struggle.'
