Board Games For Mental Health

By Guest   20th Aug 2021

In 2020, as the pandemic kicked in, broadcaster Stuart Neild found there was not too much to talk about apart from Covid-19 on his local FM radio show.

Trying to find something a bit more upbeat he turned his attention to a hobby he had taken up in 2019 and Are You Board? was born, the first FM radio show in the UK and possibly the world to talk about, review and interview all the leading lights in the board game industry.

"We had some great feedback," Stuart said. "I'd already experienced how board games could ease stress a little, but then I came across stories about how board games had really improved people's mental health and well-being."

It was these stories and personal experiences that set Stuart to work on a documentary about the subject which he entitled Board Games For Mental Health.

Stuart added: "We've got some amazing people who have taken part in the documentary, with some very uplifting stories. But I envisage the documentary to be just the start.

"I've already introduced a few people to the hobby to hopefully help with some issues they've had, but I believe Board Games For Mental Health can go even further.

"That's why I'm pleased to announce we will be hosting our first Board Games For Mental Health event from 2pm to 4pm on Saturday the 28th of August at the United Reformed Church in Congleton.

"The event is free and hopefully the first of many. If people want to bring their own board games that's fine as is if they just want to come down to see what the hobby is all about and meet new people."

United Reformed Church Minister Murray George had been a guest on one of Stuart's radio shows when he asked people in the area if they had any ideas on how the United Reformed Church could help anyone with any community projects.

When Stuart told Murray he was trying to find venues Murray and the church agreed to let Stuart host the first and hopeful regular Board Games For Mental Health event there.
