Residents have lodged a petition calling on Cheshire East Council to enforce a speed limit on a narrow lane in Congleton after a cat was sadly killed by a motorist.

Bobby a popular cat, who lived on Broadhurst Lane, Congleton, was unfortunately hit by a car on Thursday (14th May) at around 3pm.

Nub News was told that Broadhurst Lane is frequently used as a cut through to get to Dane Mill Business Centre at the bottom of the road.

Jess Clutterbuck, who has lived on Broadhurst Lane for six months, set up the petition the following day that already has over 450 signatures calling for action from Cheshire East.

Miss Clutterbuck, who has her own cat called Mylo, told Nub News: "It's so sad and the driver was so careless, there's no need to go that fast down this road, they didn't even stop.

"The whole road is so devastated; we are such a close community and have become even more close knit due to the lockdown.

"That little cat lived on the road for six years and he always came into my house and played with Mylo. It's my worst nightmare to lose Mylo, our animals are family."

Miss Clutterbuck is worried that with many people continuing to speed down Broadhurst Lane on a road that has a lot of domestic animals and small children, along with some elderly people, that further incidents could occur unless action is taken.

The personal trainer added: "There is no need to go any faster than 10 mph down this road and if that doesn't stop people speeding then we need speed bumps as well.

"As you step out of your houses, you're so close to the road and people need to take that into consideration when they're driving.

"Losing Bobby has been a big shock to everyone and it shouldn't have happened, but if we can ensure the safety of our animals and neighbours as a result of this, at least we know he wouldn't have died in vain."

Despite lockdown reducing the volume of vehicles on the road, Miss Clutterbuck stated that there are a few "near misses" every day due to speeding motorists.

Residents on Broadhurst Lane that consists of 13 properties have all financially contributed to ordering a road sign, which states "Slow – children and animals close by".

Miss Clutterbuck stated that Lynn Hercock, Bobby's owner, could not thank Congleton Veterinary Centre enough for being so "kind" and making sure Bobby was "comfortable".

A Cheshire East Council spokesperson said: "The council has a speed management strategy to help prevent incidents but any concerns around speeding traffic, on a particular road, should first be reported to the police.

"If it is felt that action is required, then the council will assess what additional measures should be taken."
