HS2 Ltd has set out plans to improve capacity at the current M56 junction 6 with the aim of supporting the projected growth at the proposed HS2 train station at Manchester Airport.

The proposals set out in conjunction with National Highways, suggest the relocation of junction 6 of the motorway to the southwest. The plans also suggest that the works will be sequenced with the ongoing HS2 construction programmes.

The M56 junction upgrade is seen as vital by HS2 given that the Manchester Airport station will connect the three services, HS2, Northern Powerhouse Rail (NPR), and the airport.

Initial concepts for the new junction would see the M56 realigned to the south and junction 6 converted to a roundabout junction. With the HS2 railway line running in a shallow tunnel underneath, new link roads would also connect the new junction to the existing local road network.

The proposals would also see the existing roundabouts at junction 6 converted to signal-controlled junctions and a direct link provided to the combined HS2/NPR station with a flyover crossing Hale Road and running parallel to the M56. To improve the local road network, the Runger Lane/Avro Way junction would also be upgraded to a signal-controlled operation.

The Manchester Airport train station will be a vital point in delivering growth to the area once HS2 and NPR are operational and its believed that the junction upgrade will facilitate that growth with extra capacity.
