Congleton tip looks set for axe

CONGLETON looks set to lose its household waste recycling centre when its lease ends in September.

According to new council documents, Cheshire East bosses are recommending the borough's cabinet 'agree that the Congleton household waste recycling centre (HWRC) will not be replaced while' a borough-wide review of the centres is undertaken.

The recommendation suggests that a last-ditch attempt by CEC's environment committee in February to purchase the land on which the site sits has failed.

"Not replacing the current facility in Congleton would reduce the future running cost of the HWRC service and so partly mitigate the anticipated increased cost of the new contract," a council report said.

"Furthermore, it would avoid the cost associated with repaying the capital investment required to deliver a replacement facility at Congleton which is estimated to be £250,000 per annum."

The report also claims that it would cost in the region of £4 million to replace the Congleton site — which would have to be financed by borrowing at an annual cost of 'at least £250,000 over 25 years'.

Currently, the council is also considering the future of the borough seven other tips, as the contract to run them ends in 2023.

Ahead of that date, it has published plans on the future of the HWRCs, which would result in some closures.

As part of their considerations, the authority launched a public consultation earlier this year.

By far the most popular option was to keep the centres open as they are now, with 50 per cent of respondents voting 'strongly agreed'.

Cheshire East's cabinet will meet virtually at 1pm tomorrow (Tuesday, April 13).
